SY Octopus is back in the water....

May 30, 2012
SY Octopus is back in the water where she belongs! She was on the hard for over 18mts, way too long. Tomorrow we will get busy cleaning the deck of 18 months worth of yard dust and Sahara rain and just general dirt. At present her colour is light brown instead of off white, we shall see if she looks any better come tomorrow evening. (having cleaned her a number of times now the answer is NO!!)

Our plans are still very much up in the air, most likely we will do some inland touring with our friends starting Tuesday, June 5. We hope that by the time we come back we have a better idea of the upcoming sailing season, will it take us to Marseilles onboard SY Augusta or will we have some leisurely sailing along the Southeastern coast of Turkey?

August 8
In the meantime Izzy and Howard SY Augusta have gone back to the UK, Augusta is still not quite sold yet and their plans are also still up in the air.
Before flying back to the UK we did enjoy a trip inland with I&H, we took a bus to Ankara and toured the Hittite area with a rented car. it was a great trip.

We have been East, it was even hotter than here and we did experience some terrible catabatic winds at night. But worse was the temperature of these winds, it was like someone opened the door of an oven and blew that HOT air at you, most uncomfortable and hence we decided to head back.

We have had a lovely visit from our friends Edwin and Michaela, Dario (17) and Gian Andrea (2) from Switzerland. We managed to show everybody a good time, we even headed out for a while and anchored in the bay.

Now we have to decide if we stay here in the marina where we can have a shower, be connected to electricity (fan?!) and walk off the boat early in the morning for a hike into the hills before it gets too hot or motor direction Kekova Roads where we could sit at anchor.

Back on board SY Octopus

We are back on board, mind you still on the hard, and it seems like we have been here forever. Come to think of it, we have been here in the same spot in the Alanya marina yard since September 2010!!!
Time flies even when you are not having all that much fun, ergo, time to move on.

Our trip to Europe has been wonderful. Seeing our kids and so far only grandchild and experiencing the joy the 2 great grandparents exhibited was worth every penny.

Easter Sunday Brunch

Our granddaughter Klara was a real treat, she managed singlehandedly to capture everyones attention. Parents Kim and Sebas need to be congratulated, they are doing a great job rearing and nurturing Klara and we all hope that Klara did not get tooooooo terribly spoiled in the 2 weeks!?
Lars and Sharon arrived from Vancouver island, stressed out and under pressure to finalise the budget and timetable for the lifting of their new abode. We are happy to announce that upon their return to Canada they have decided to first live in the house for a year and experience what the place has to offer and then finalise the plans for the lift. Wise decision indeed! They will go ahead with the variance application as that permit, once recieved does not expire.

Opa Henk has enjoyed the visit of his grandchildren and only great grandchild to the fullest. It was a tossup between the 2 great grandparents,

Opa Henk 95yrs old (Holland) and Grosi 89 yrs old (visiting from Switzerland) who was the prouder and happier of the two?

Now that we are back in Turkey we are busy with preparations for our coming season. There is a possibility that we help sailing friends who have (hopefully) sold their boat, move the boat to Marseille. From there the new owner will take the boat through the canals back to Norway.

This would suit as fine as we have no plans for this season, just relaxing and enjoying ourselves.

Wintering in Alanya

Once again much time has passed since our last entry to our blog.

Our son Lars and partner Sharon are indeed the proud owners of a house in greater Victoria, BC, Canada. The plans to raise the house need to be submitted by March 16 in order to have all the permits to start this hair-raising project by May 1!!

Klara Alexia is the sunshine of our life, she looks at us from the kingpost in our saloon and she manages nearly effortlessly to lift our spirits.

Kim and Sebas life is slowly coming together. They will soon get ready to take Klara on her first trip to Europe to visit great grandparents. Klara will be royally spoiled and K & S will have to pay the price once they are back in Ottawa!! Such is life…..

We will leave Alanya Turkey in 1 week, Gerry flying straight to Holland, B stopping off in Switzerland. However we will all be present and accounted for on April 5 to celebrate Gerry’s dad’s 95th birthday!

Work on SY Octopus has been coming along slowly due to a rather cold and rainy winter here. As usual, it has been the worst winter on record, but we have heard this comment since we started wintering back in 2004! To be honest it really has not been the best of winters, we have been hit by so many heavy thunderstorms, we lost count. The shoes we are wearing most often are our wellies (read rubber boots). The mood in the marina is low; most of us are really looking forward to some warmer dryer weather in order to get our boats ready for the coming season. Where will it take us, we do not yet know for sure, nothing too strenuous in any case.
We have bit the bullet and we have acquired a 1 year residency permit for Turkey, we just got tired of living with this constant change of law interpretation, it has been getting us down and we decided that this would make our lives easier for the time being. Next year we will deal with when the time comes. The options for us sailors are a bit limited, Greece being Greece, broke and full of unsatisfied people seeing us yachties as an easy source of CASH….Italy keeping on changing their laws with respect to yachties, the Eastern Med being a bit politically unstable, Spain also being in need of easy cash…..we will see.

In any case, first things first, our trip to Europe where we will be under one roof as a real family for the first time in a very long time, should be interesting. I for one am really looking forward to having everyone around.
